"Hope is the thing with feathers

That perches in the soul

And sings the tune without the words

And never stops at all."

―
Emily Dickinson

As we move into the holiday season and a new year we need to understand that life is a continual unfolding. Our children are works in progress, and our own lives are a book that we are writing day by day.

How do we incorporate hope into our families?

·        Realize that all of us can change: growth is a natural part of our existence. You will marvel at your child's newfound loving nature and maturity one day, even as you marvel now at their selfishness and bad habits.

·        Remember that all growth needs to be nurtured to create the best results: how well do we feed and support growth in our families with optimism, firm and loving guidance for our children, and support for one another as parents? (Think of a garden here, if you will.)

·        Present challenges will emerge: "life is difficult" (as Scott Peck reminded us in his first line of The Road Less Traveled). How we progress is more a function of attitude than ability. Do we look at a problem as an opportunity for growth - using a "growth mind set" - or as a pain to be suffered - using a "fixed mind set"? (Remember, our kids are watching when we struggle with life's "stupid stuff" as well as when we shine.)

·        How you embrace your child's life does make a difference: we can choose to be optimistic or pessimistic, loving or critical, present or absent on a daily basis. Look for the small victories and be encouraging when there are defeats.  (Don't you want optimistic, loving, and present people in your own life?)

A blessed holiday season and a prosperous new year to all - be hopeful!

As you consider your end-of-year contributions please consider Quaker Bolivia Link, an organization that helps the Aymara people of the altiplano region of Bolivia with projects that provide clean water, food security, and financial options for success. These projects are completed jointly with the villagers and provide hope for a better future. Visit our website at www.qbl.org to make a donation.
